The Orthodox cross, also known as the Russian Orthodox cross, is a distinctive symbol used in the Eastern Orthodox Church. It features three horizontal bars: the top bar represents the inscription board placed above Jesus Christ’s head, the middle bar is the main horizontal bar where Christ’s hands were nailed, and the bottom slanted bar represents the footrest.

The main difference between the Orthodox cross and the more commonly known Christian cross (Latin cross) lies in their design. While the Christian cross typically has a single horizontal bar, the Orthodox cross includes three horizontal bars with the bottom bar slanted. The additional bars on the Orthodox cross have specific symbolic meanings related to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

The slanted bottom bar on the Orthodox cross represents the footrest of Jesus Christ during the crucifixion. One end of the bar points upward, symbolising the penitent thief who was crucified alongside Jesus and went to Heaven. The other end points downward, symbolising the unrepentant thief who went to Hell.
